Thursday, September 12: Weimar, Coburg, and Nuremberg

I’m not sure what to write today. I woke up with a bit of a sinus infection. The weather is being quite rude. It is too cold for me. I need my vitamin D. And my face hurts.

The schedule for today was Weimar, Coburg Castle, and then Nuremberg.

Weimar is known for the Weimar Republic. I was asleep all day on the bus when the history was explained but I caught something about progressivism and freedom for gays. Matt is the history buff out of the two of us so this was old news to him.

We were instructed to grab some food to go at Weimar to eat it at Coburg since there wasn’t much to eat there. Matt and I had some trouble finding a grocery store so we just went to a cafe and had XL pretzels and coffee. We did not plan ahead.
I didn’t take a lot of pictures today but check out this photo I took of thieving bees at the cafe.

Also we all got a crazy loud alert on our phones similar to an Amber Alert. Some people didn’t get the translation on their phone and went into a slight panic.

Coburg Castle is famous for a number of reasons. But the one that I remember is for being the place where Luther translated the Bible. It was a mild trek up to the top of the hill where the castle was. Normally it would’ve been easy-peezy, but the cold air was a bit rough on the lungs.

In the evening, our tour director walked us all to the city center to check it out and to find dinner. Let me tell you I am one of the youngest on this tour and I struggled the most. I think it’s because a lot of folks are from the Midwest and Canada. I had on 2 jackets and some of them didn’t have on any. It was 50 degrees F. We found a steakhouse that managed to squeeze us in without a reservation so long as we stayed less than an hour and half. They said don’t worry, they would prepare our food with plenty of time to eat it. I had some bull broth and a ribeye. Matt had tartar and ribeye. We were both quite pleased. I’m noticing everywhere that radishes are on almost everything. I’m allergic but I can get by with just picking it off. I keep forgetting to mention it to places. We usually have to worry about Matt’s Squash allergy a lot more!

Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the building where the Nuremberg trials were held. This was a real bummer for Matt. Our tour director said it was just another building like any other. She seems to only be interested in pre-20th century architecture.
